More than disappointing

If you are thinking of using Spectacle Warehouse (www.spectacle-warehouse.co.uk) at Hoylake, Wirral for your optical glasses - DON'T. While searching for a suitable optician on the web, I came across Spectacle Warehouse and after reading all the information on their website (www.spectacle-warehouse.co.uk) I felt that it was the right company to approach in order to fit new varifocal transition lenses into my existing frames. The company claims to supply quality prescription, and non-prescription spectacles. Spectacle Warehouse advertises an excellent customer care and Roy Corke, who runs the practice, calls himself the most highly respected optical technician in UK today, renowned for his attention to detail and always putting the customer first. The website also states that Roy Corke has a vast amount of experience in the manufacturing and supply of prescription and non-proscription spectacles. His aim is to provide a low cost quality service which doesn’t deviate away from high quality workmanship. I was especially interested in varifocal Freeform lenses, which are advertised on the website. They supposedly give high resolution vision, and eliminate corridor vision. The website also claims that they give greater comfort to the wearer, and quicker user adaption as compared to traditional, progressive lenses. I called Spectacle Warehouse and explained that I needed new varifocal transition lenses to be fitted into my existing frames and I had a recent prescription. Mr Corke mentioned that it was going to be difficult as I live in London and could not come to his practice for measurements. I explained that I had my old lenses which were practically undamaged and I could send them to him together with my frames and he could use the measurements from them. Mr Corke was perfectly happy with this, and we agreed that once he received my old glasses he would examine them and give me a call to discuss the best options available to me. He gave me a rough estimate of cost involved, which was to be from £200 to £250 plus £5 towards secure post to return the glasses to me. I was very happy with the price and eagerly agreed. I posted my old glasses to Spectacle Warehouse on 12th October 2009 with a letter requesting that the best lenses available were supplied and fitted into my frames. A few days later I received a call from Mr Corke who said that the new lenses would cost me £210 and I would be getting very advanced lenses which would cost £400 if I were to buy them from a High Street optician. No other options were discussed and I trusted Mr Corke with his long experience as an optical technician to make the decision which lenses were best for me. I sent a cheque to the practice and the glasses arrived back within days. They looked very nice, the frames were cleaned, the lenses appeared to be fitted very well, and my first reaction was a very positive one. However, when I put the glasses on I could see very well in the distance, but close vision was creating a problem for me and I could not focus properly. As the difference between my old proscription and the new one was very small, I assumed that my eyes needed time to adjust. After 10 days I still could not short focus properly, and by this time I had started getting double vision, headaches, and odd sensations in my eyes which began to worry me. I contacted Mr Corke and explained the problem and we agreed that I needed to send the glasses back to see if there was any obvious problem with them. Mr Corke asked me to send my old lenses together with the new glasses, which he insisted were returned to me. I could not recall receiving the old lenses and could not find them and suggested that I would send another pair of glasses which had exactly the same lenses in them, as I purchased the two pairs of glasses and the lenses at the same time, based upon the same prescription. Mr Corke therefore agreed that I send my two pairs of glasses to him to carry out the assessment. I waited two weeks, after which my two pairs of glasses were returned to me (they are ‘Fred’ frames worth £900 each and were sent back to me by insecure post and simply left by a postman outside my front door) . Regrettably the newly fitted lenses were returned in exactly the same condition as I sent them. However, the practice also sent back one of the old lenses which obviously had been found. Enclosed was a letter from Mr Corke stating that there was nothing wrong with the new lenses. No one contacted me beforehand to explain the situation and discuss my options and the only advice I received from Mr Corke was to get the bridge altered. I was very surprised when the glasses were returned to me, especially because Mr Corke was fully aware that I could not wear them. With no other option, I visited a High Street optician for some advice. The optician was very helpful and explained to me that there were many different varifocal lenses on the market and not every lens suited every wearer. He tried to determine which lenses were supplied to me by Spectacle Warehouse but he could not recognise them, nor could his suppliers recognise them from the information encoded on the lenses. He checked the lenses and they appeared to be the right prescription but it was very obvious that the supplied lenses had a very narrow close focal area and they did not appear to be anything like the lenses advertised on their website as a high resolution Freeform lenses. I contacted Mr Corke by e-mail on 26th November 2009 requesting that he let me know what lenses were fitted into my frames. I asked him to give me the details of the brand, material and design of these lenses. My e-mail was ignored for three days, after which time I sent another one requesting an answer. In response I received a short e-mail from Mr Corke which did not address the problem, and did not give any information concerning the lenses Mr Corke had supplied. Instead Mr Corke stated that I was given exactly what I requested and he was discharging his obligation to me. I replied to this e-mail, stressing the point that I could not wear the glasses and asking again for the details of the lenses. This e-mail has been ignored, and to this day I have not heard from Spectacle Warehouse. (I later discovered that they the lenses fitted into my frames were imported from a manufacturer based in Korea who confirmed that they were not the best lenses). I feel very strongly that the company has, in my case, operated in a very unprofessional manner, and does not wish to take any responsibility for any problems that might arise. The advertising on the website is very misleading and the customer is not properly informed of the product he/she receives.
